Human misery leaks out of people as curses: invisible monsters born from fear, resentment and grief that feed on the living. Jujutsu sorcerers fight them in secret, and most of them die young and unremarked. Yuji Itadori is an ordinary high schooler with frightening physical strength until he swallows a mummified finger to save his friends and becomes the host of Ryomen Sukuna, the strongest curse who ever lived. Rather than execute him, the sorcerer Satoru Gojo enrols him at Tokyo Jujutsu High, where the plan is simple and grim: let Yuji collect all twenty fingers, then kill him with Sukuna inside. Between missions he meets classmates who are as damaged as he is, and learns what a decent death costs.
A boy swallows a cursed object to protect people he loves and wakes up sharing his body with a monster. The sorcerers who should kill him instead enrol him in a school for exorcists, on the condition that he dies once his usefulness ends. He agrees, then spends the series arguing with himself about what he owes the living and the dead.

Yuji's grandfather tells him to die surrounded by people, and the series takes that literally. Nearly every character is measured by the death they are working towards and who will be left holding it.
Every monster here begins as ordinary human feeling: dread of hospitals, hatred of a bully, grief that never resolved. The horror is not invading from elsewhere; it is manufactured daily by the people the sorcerers protect.
Gojo teaches because the previous generation of sorcerers built a rotten institution, and he cannot fix it alone. The elders scheme, Nanami counts the hours to retirement, and the students inherit the mess.
Technique here is mostly bloodline and luck: the Zenin and Gojo clans hoard it, Maki is punished for lacking it, and Yuji's power is borrowed from the thing trying to eat him.
Jujutsu Kaisen arrived in 2020 and became the shonen series everyone argued about, largely on the strength of MAPPA's animation: fights with weight and legible geography rather than speed lines. It also refused the genre's usual comfort. Its adults are exhausted, its deaths are ugly and unheroic, and its hero's central question is not how to win but how to die without leaving a mess for others to carry.
