Nobara Kugisaki

A first-year from the countryside who came to Tokyo because she wanted the city, not the job, and treats sorcery as the price of that ticket. Her technique drives nails and straw dolls into curses at range, and her confidence is armour she maintains deliberately. She is the one who says out loud that she likes herself.

Short, sharply dressed, with orange-brown hair cut to the jaw and an expression that dares comment. She carries a hammer and a pouch of nails, and her fighting stance is closer to a carpenter's than a martial artist's.

Loud, vain in a self-aware way, and completely unwilling to apologise for wanting a life she likes. She came for Tokyo, not for the calling, and says so. Her bravado is genuine armour rather than a mask: she has decided who she is, and the series treats that decision as strength rather than a flaw to be corrected.

Raised in a village she found suffocating, shaped by an older girl who left for the city and by the neighbours who gossiped about her for it. She trained in her family's straw doll technique and took the first route to Tokyo available, which happened to require exorcising curses.

   Joins the class, clears her first solo mission with more relish than caution, and survives the detention centre.
