Generations after the great ninja wars, the Hidden Leaf Village has become a place of trains, screens and comfortable peace. Boruto Uzumaki, eldest child of the Seventh Hokage, resents a father who is always at the office and insists he will never follow the same path. Assigned to a squad with Sarada Uchiha and the enigmatic Mitsuki under Konohamaru Sarutobi's command, he stumbles through missions, the Chūnin Exams and the growing pains of a shinobi world that increasingly relies on technology rather than tradition. That peace fractures when otherworldly beings and a shadowy research organization called Kara begin harvesting the planet's chakra, leaving Boruto marked by a power he does not understand. The series balances lighthearted school-age adventures and standalone missions with an escalating central conflict involving Kawaki, a boy raised as a weapon, and enemies far beyond a genin's reach. Familiar faces from the previous generation return as mentors, parents and, occasionally, obstacles.
Boruto Uzumaki grows up in a modernized Hidden Leaf Village where his father, Naruto, serves as Hokage and is rarely home. Determined to prove himself on his own terms, Boruto joins Team 7 alongside Sarada Uchiha and Mitsuki under Konohamaru's guidance. A strange mark appears on his palm after a fateful encounter, drawing him into a conflict involving the secretive organization Kara and forces that threaten the entire world.

An adaptation of the Naruto Gaiden side story sends Sarada searching for her absent father Sasuke and confronting Shin Uchiha, ending with her Sharingan awakening. Later chapters cover a school trip to the Hidden Mist, where Kagura Karatachi struggles with the Seven Swordsmen's bloody legacy, the phantom-thief Byakuya Gang, and the graduation exam against Kakashi.
Episodes 39-66
The arc that retells the Boruto film. Team 7 enters the Chunin Exams, where Boruto secretly uses a banned scientific ninja tool and is disqualified by his own father. The humiliation is cut short when Momoshiki and Kinshiki Otsutsuki invade, abduct Naruto and force Boruto to fight beside Sasuke and the Kage. Victory leaves a Karma mark burned into Boruto's palm.

Post-exam assignments deepen the new generation: escorting Shukaku, the Mujina Bandits case and Boruto's friendship with the sheltered lord Tento. The centerpiece is Mitsuki's defection, which drags Team 7 into the Land of Earth, the artificial Akuta soldiers and Ohnoki's desperate dream of protecting his village, forcing Mitsuki to define his own will apart from Orochimaru.

Urashiki Otsutsuki's pursuit of tailed-beast chakra hurls Boruto and Sasuke into the past, where Boruto meets his father as a reckless young genin and trains under Jiraiya. Back in the present, Konohamaru's scouting missions reveal the shadowy Kara organization, and Team 7's crushing loss to the Inner Deepa forces a long stretch of hard training.

Kara's hunt for its runaway vessel brings Kawaki into the Uzumaki household, where a brutalized weapon slowly learns what a family is. Delta's assault, Boro's resurrection jutsu and Amado's defection expose Jigen as a host for Isshiki Otsutsuki, leading to Naruto's desperate Baryon Mode, a devastating sacrifice, and Momoshiki's seizure of Boruto's body.
Episodes 221-293
A long run of original stories explores side characters and Konoha's new generation before the series returns to canon. Code, the last of Kara's inner circle, targets Boruto and Kawaki with Claw Grimes and the buried Divine Trees, while Eida's uncanny power unsettles the village. The anime closes in 2023 on Boruto and Kawaki's fragile, doomed brotherhood.

The premiere opens on a ruined Konoha with an older Boruto facing Kawaki, then rewinds years to a sulking Academy student. That flash-forward hangs over everything that follows and defines the series' central question of how the two boys end up there.

Sarada Uchiha Arc
The emotional peak of the Naruto Gaiden adaptation, in which Sarada's doubts about her parents and her place in the Uchiha name resolve in a confrontation with Shin and a hard-won reunion with Sasuke.
Episode 66
Versus Momoshiki Arc
The climax of the Momoshiki storyline, where father and son finally fight side by side and combine their Rasengan. It converts Boruto's resentment into understanding and ends with the ominous Karma mark that drives the rest of the series.

Boruto, Sarada, Shikadai and their classmates are measured against parents who are living history. Much of the series is about the resentment, imitation and eventual self-definition that comes from inheriting a name you never chose.
Trains, terminals and scientific ninja tools let anyone mimic jutsu, raising a running question: if technology can replace decades of training, what is a shinobi for? Boruto's disqualification at the Chunin Exams crystallizes the conflict.
The generation raised after the Fourth Great Ninja War has never known real war, and the adults who won it are distant, overworked administrators. The story repeatedly asks whether inherited peace can survive without the sacrifices that bought it.
The Otsutsuki treat people as containers, and Karma marks turn Boruto and Kawaki into ticking clocks. Later arcs push this further with rewritten memories and Divine Tree duplicates, making the loss of one's own identity the central horror.
As the official continuation of one of anime's best-known franchises, Boruto carried Naruto's weekly television presence for six years and introduced the saga to a new generation of viewers. It reframes the ninja world as an era of peace, technology and legacy pressure, asking what shinobi mean when there is no war to fight. Its long-running debates over filler, pacing and adaptation order also made it a lightning rod in modern anime fandom discourse.

The anime ran from April 2017 to March 2023 for 293 episodes, ending with an adaptation of the Sasuke Retsuden novel. It is not a true ending: the production paused for a planned continuation, so the story stops before the manga's major time skip.
It is strongly recommended. Boruto assumes you know Naruto's rise to Hokage, Sasuke's history, the tailed beasts and the Ōtsutsuki threat. Newcomers can technically follow Team 7's academy days, but most emotional payoffs, cameos and villains depend on the earlier series.
The premiere opens with a teenage Boruto facing Kawaki in a devastated Konoha, where Kawaki declares the age of shinobi over. It is a glimpse of a later confrontation used as a hook; the anime paused long before the narrative caught up to that scene.
Roughly a third of the series adapts the manga, including the Versus Momoshiki, Kara Actuation, Kawaki, Kara Clash and Vessel arcs. The rest is anime-original material such as the school trip, Mujina Bandits, Mitsuki's disappearance and the time-slip story, some of it written with Kishimoto's involvement.
