The bald, gourd-toting commander of the Garrison's southern territory, Pyxis is an eccentric drinker with a startlingly flexible mind. When Trost falls and the regular chain of command dissolves into panic, he takes charge, gambles on Armin's untested plan and rallies deserting soldiers with a speech that shames them back into the line. Pragmatic rather than idealistic, he sees Eren's power as a tool worth the risk.

An elderly officer of average build whose bald head, thick white eyebrows and full white mustache give him the look of a retired grandfather rather than a front-line commander. Deep creases line his brow and the corners of his narrow eyes, which usually sit half-closed in amused calculation. He wears the standard Garrison uniform with the rose insignia, often with the jacket worn loosely or a long coat draped over his shoulders, and keeps a metal hip flask within easy reach. Even in crisis his posture stays relaxed, hands clasped behind his back, radiating unhurried authority.

Pyxis is an eccentric, wine-loving veteran who treats catastrophe with disarming calm and dry humor, cracking jokes about his own drinking and mortality while soldiers panic around him. Beneath the levity is a ruthless pragmatist who evaluates people by usefulness rather than birth or reputation, and who is willing to gamble on an untested boy if the odds justify it. He believes fear can be redirected into purpose, and he is unafraid to lie, manipulate or shame troops into standing their ground. Crucially, he insists on shouldering blame personally so subordinates can act. He also entertains ideas considered near-treasonous, such as the notion that humanity would only unite if faced with a common external enemy.

A career officer of the Garrison Regiment, Pyxis rose over decades to command the forces guarding the southern stretch of Wall Rose, the territory that includes Trost District and the ruined gateway to Wall Maria. He lived through the peaceful century when the walls held, watching the Garrison decay into a body of drunkards and idlers, and he survived the fall of Shiganshina and the disastrous reclamation operation that followed, experiences that left him with few illusions about how expendable ordinary soldiers are to the interior aristocracy. Respected across all three branches, he cultivated a reputation for unorthodox thinking and a working rapport with the Survey Corps leadership, positioning himself as one of the few senior figures willing to act rather than wait.

1. Battle of Trost District

   Summoned after the Colossal Titan breaches Trost's gate, Pyxis arrives to find the defense collapsing and squads dying piecemeal. Briefed by Armin about a boy who can transform into a Titan and carry a boulder, he listens to the whole improbable proposal, questions Eren directly, and decides the risk is worth taking rather than dismissing it as madness.

2. The Trost Recapture Operation

   Pyxis addresses the assembled Garrison from the wall, admits deserters will not be punished, then deliberately shames and inspires them by invoking the families sheltering behind Wall Rose. He organizes the troops into a massive diversion, sends elite squads to escort Eren to the breach, and openly promises to take sole responsibility if the plan fails.

3. Aftermath and the Question of Eren

   When Eren loses control and attacks Mikasa, and when Captain Weilman's squad prepares to execute him on the spot, Pyxis restrains the panic and shields the boy, framing him as humanity's asset rather than a monster. He talks privately with Eren atop the wall, muses about enemies beyond the walls, and shepherds the survivors through the grim cleanup.

4. Eren's Military Tribunal

   At the hearing that will decide whether Eren is dissected by the Military Police or handed to the Survey Corps, Pyxis lends his prestige to Erwin Smith's petition, testifying to the boy's value during the Trost operation and quietly working the room. His backing helps tip the ruling toward the Survey Corps taking custody.

Pyxis treats Eren as both a weapon and a young man, listening to him rather than caging him, shielding him from execution, and later sharing candid speculation about the world beyond the walls during a quiet moment atop Wall Rose.
